About the Temple and history
Of all the Yogini temples that archaeologists have discovered, the Hirapur Temple is the smallest and yet the most powerful. Situated at Hirapur, 20km from Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, lies this yogini temple. Legend has it that Queen Hiradevi of the Bramha Dynasty constructed the temple in the ninth century, but she later abandoned it. It wasn’t found again until 1953.
Yogini temples differ greatly from other temples and shrines in their architectural style. Yogini temples are almost exclusively round and hypaethral, meaning they are open to the universal elements and have therefore no roof. The chakra, a deeply symbolic wheel that symbolises the deity’s world, is represented by the circular architecture of the yogini temple.
